The men are accused of selling a gun to a 14-year-old boy who is suspected of killing three people at Siam Paragon Shopping Center.
Thai police have arrested two men on suspicion of selling guns to a 14-year-old gunman suspected of killing three people at a Bangkok shopping mall.
A suspect was arrested in connection with the murder that occurred at Siam Paragon Shopping Center on Tuesday. He was also charged with carrying and discharging a weapon in a public place and possessing an unlicensed firearm. On Thursday morning, police in the country's southern Yala province arrested two people on suspicion of providing a boy at a shopping mall with a blank handgun that had been modified to fire live ammunition.
"Police searched their homes to find further evidence related to the incident," a senior Yarra police official told AFP. "They were sent to Bangkok for questioning.''
Hundreds of shoppers fled the mall when shots were fired on Tuesday, injuring seven people. Police said the suspect had previously been treated for mental illness but had stopped taking his medication. He is currently undergoing a psychiatric evaluation to determine his fitness to stand trial.
October 6th marks the first anniversary of the daycare shooting, one of the deadliest massacres in Thailand's modern history, in which a former police officer killed at least 35 people with a gun and knife.
In 2020, Thai soldiers barricaded themselves in a shopping center and killed 29 people. Following the shooting incident at Siam Paragon Shopping Center, there are renewed calls for stricter gun control.
The country has experienced an influx of legal and illegal weapons, resulting in one of the highest gun ownership rates in Southeast Asia. According to the international database, there are approximately 10 million weapons in circulation in Thailand, one for each citizen.
Thai Prime Minister Suretta Thavisin vowed on Wednesday to take "precautionary measures" to prevent further incidents of this type.
