Hypocrisy of Western leaders: An existing debate re-ignited

This is not the first time Western countries have been accused of showing double standards in their stance on the war in Ukraine.

Earlier this year, Amnesty published a report highlighting Western “double standards” when it comes to human rights around the world. Agnès Callamard, Amnesty secretary general, told Al Jazeera at the time that the Palestinian occupation was “exceptionally important”.

“Without drawing any comparison between Russian aggression and Israeli aggression… it is clear that the Palestinian people are subject to an oppressive regime. An occupation regime and an apartheid regime,” Callamard told Al Jazeera.

Over the past three days, user In which he rebuked the Irish Government's double standards regarding Ukraine and Palestine.

“You are happy to use the strongest, most powerful language to describe Vladimir Putin's crimes against humanity, but you will not use the same force of language when describing his treatment with Israel towards the Palestinians.”

On Sunday, Barrett again denounced what he called “the shocking double standards of Western leaders who support Ukraine's resistance but condemn the Palestinians.”

Meanwhile, others warned against comparing conflicts.

And some have warned that Hamas and the Palestinians should not be considered the same.

Ukrainian footballer Oleksandr Zinchenko, who plays for Arsenal, posted on Instagram that he “stands with Israel.”

Zinchenko has been a strong supporter of his homeland's fight against Russia and he took part in a Game4Ukraine charity match in London earlier this year to raise money for Ukraine.

Following backlash online, with some questioning double standards in supporting Israel, the footballer deleted the post and made his social media accounts private.

Some have suggested that Zinchenko's football club, by not responding to his comments, were guilty of hypocrisy after distancing themselves from former player Mesut Ozil's comments in 2019 regarding alleged misconduct. human rights violations against Uighur Muslims in China.
